A U.S. flag covers the interior front door of a damaged house in Breezy Point, a neighborhood in the Queens borough of New York which was left devastated by Hurricane Sandy on Nov. 14, 2012.
Hurricane Sandy came to be known as the largest Atlantic hurricane leaving severe damage up the east coast and in New York. At least 53 people died in New York as a result of the storm. Economic losses in the city were estimated to be at least $18 billion.
